Horse Confirmation 101: Why Understanding Conformation is so Important

While it can often feel as though the list of things to know about horses is endless (cue lifelong learner status!), it’s really important that all horsemen and women have a fundamental understanding of equine conformation.
Why, you might ask?
Great question!
I don’t know much about engines, but if I were to buy an old 1965 Mustang to drive, I might want to learn in a hurry, since the aged technology might be prone to locking up in cold weather. If I don’t want to be stuck on the side of the road, it would benefit me to have some understanding of how the thing worked, so I could troubleshoot any issues that arise and get home before it snows any more.
The same logic applies to horses. To begin to understand why certain behaviors might crop up or how soreness or lameness is expressed, it’s beneficial to have a working knowledge of how a horse works and conformation is the basis of that understanding.
Like people, horses are all built a little differently. Some have thick necks, long backs, short noses, and each of these conformational features can impact how they move and function. For instance, a horse with a neck set low in the chest will have different challenges in the dressage ring than a horse with a very short back and stride.
While I would love to give you a dissertation on horse confirmation, I’ve found a better option: A great PDF from the Equinology Institute, by Dr. Barb Crabbe with Debranne Patillo, on basic considerations of equine conformation. It’s a document you can download and read at your own pace, applying principles you learn or asking questions at lessons.
